Looking back at my teenage years I’m realizing that I did a lot of weird things just to try to fit in. I used to buy clothes I didn’t even like, so that I could dress a certain way in order to be “cool”. I’d go to places I wasn’t interested in going to so that I could be in with the crowd. I even held back my real opinion so that I wouldn’t be the odd girl out who thought differently. Funny thing is, none of these things even helped me fit in. None of these people I was showing out for even cared, or noticed that I was making such an effort to be a part.
What I love about all this is that now, after all these years I’ve really come to OWN what makes me different. My individuality is my favourite part… I wear what I want, do what I want, and say what I want simply because being an individual makes me feel great! I don’t need to check if anyone likes my outfit, or if anyone’s going to think I’m weird because of my sudden wild, silly outbursts. Fact is, I am a little weird and I completely own it! When people say “You’re weird af”, my response is always, “Thank you” with a big dorky grin on my face. Thank you for noticing what makes me who I am. For realizing that there is something different about me and that I have no shame about it. Cause when I really think about it, if someone came up to me and said, “Hey you’re just like all the other girls out there” I’d be pretty damn offended. Not because there’s something wrong with all the other girls but because my individuality is my favourite part.
Take a moment to reflect. What is your favourite part about you? Is it the way you love? The way you snort when you find something really funny? Is it your spirit? What makes you special? I know this may be different for you, or difficult for some, but offer yourself some praise. It’s the little things that you take pride in that make the world of a difference to the way you see yourself.
